Promote the "greening" of the textile and garment industry by applying advanced wastewater recycling technology in industrial zone

11/05/2022 03:33 PM
With the aim of increasing awareness, learning and accumulating more knowledge about wastewater treatment systems and water circulation, on May 5-6, the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS) coordinated with The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) organized the conference: "Wastewater treatment and dyeing wastewater recyclying in Tam Thang & Chu Lai Industrial zone, Quang Nam Province.
Attending the conference were representatives of VITAS, WWF and textile businesses, along with the Management Board of Tam Thang & Chu Lai Industrial zone.

In the opening speech, Ms. Nga Hoang Thanh - WWF Textile Program Manager said that the Greening Textile and Garment Industry project, chaired by WWF Vietnam and VITAS since 2018 so far had organized many practical activities for businesses in the textile and garment industry, bringing many positive effects and being highly appreciated by businesses.

Because the project focuses on improving water and energy management with the long-term goal of enhancing the sustainability of ecosystems and habitats, supporting climate change mitigation through increased sustainable energy use and improved water and energy efficiency. Greening the textile industry will help reduce the concern of local authorities when approving specialized textile and garment industrial zone projects thanks to the planning that considers strict environmental sustainability, especially is about water consumption and wastewater discharge.

Ms. Nga Hoang Thanh – WWF Vietnam Textile Program Manager

According to Mr. Cam Van Truong - Vice Chairman cum General Secretary of VITAS, in the first quarter of 2022, Vietnam's textile and garment export turnover reached 10,694 billion USD, up 20.38% over the same period in 2021. This is such an impressive growth rate. However, Mr. Cam said that Vietnam's textile and garment industry is currently developing unbalanced, the weakest stage is still upstream, such as spinning, weaving and dyeing fabrics. Cotton imports are up to 99%, and fabric imports are nearly 80% of the total demand (in 2021, we imported 14 billion USD), creating a "bottleneck" at the textile dyeing stage, while investment projects in textile dyeing have been delayed due to concerns about environmental pollution.

Mr. Cam Van Truong - Vice Chairman cum General Secretary of VITAS

"Currently, there are industrial zones specializing in textiles and garments such as Pho Noi B Textile (Hung Yen), Bao Minh (Nam Dinh), Phong Dien (Thua Thien Hue), Tam Thang, North Chu Lai (Quang Nam), Nhon Trach (Quang Nam),… Many industrial zones have wastewater treatment systems to meet the requirements of investors. Therefore, creating favorable conditions for investment projects in the textile and dyeing stage is a core factor for textile enterprises to achieve sustainable development goals and increase exports to major markets.", Mr. Cam shared.

Mr. Le Ngoc Thuy - Director of Tam Thang Industrial zone Management Board said that Tam Thang Industrial zone is one of 05 industrial zones of Chu Lai Open Economic Zone located in Binh Nam commune, Thang Binh district and Tam Thang commune, Tam Ky city. Quang Nam province with an occupancy rate of 75%, mainly textile and garment enterprises and ancillary companies in the textile and garment industry, manufacturing components, auto equipment... Currently, the Tam Thang Industrial Park concentrates on the company's wastewater treatment plant. Their investor, Panko Tam Thang Co., Ltd, treats all companies operating in the industrial park with an average water volume of 6,000 m3/day. Currently, the factory's treated wastewater is connected to the Tam Thang Industrial Park Water Reuse Plant with 26,000 m3/day and night, and the treated wastewater meets QCVN 01:2009/BYT (specified for drinking water), reused to serve production enterprises in the industrial zone.

Mr. Thuy Le Ngoc - Director of Tam Thang Industrial zone Management Board

Mr. Ngoc Cao Minh – Director of Reuse Technologies Solutions JSC

At the conference, participating enterprises had a clearer view of the recycling system, reuse of wastewater, and information on solutions and advantages of environmental protection in business development through an exchange with other stakeholders. Speakers. Businesses all agree that the construction of industrial zones with standard wastewater treatment systems is beautiful to many investors, especially investors from Korea and recently from Europe.
