Sustainable vs. Regenerative Agriculture: Understanding the Basics

Healthy soil underpins cotton production by reducing erosion, storing water, recycling nutrients, and supporting beneficial organisms. Strong soil health enhances water efficiency, fertilizer use, land productivity, and carbon storage – laying the foundation for sustainable yields.


Short- and Long-Term Benefits

  • Immediate gains: reduced fuel consumption and lower production costs.

According to a 2022 Soil Health Institute study, regenerative soil management practices delivered an average USD 47 per acre in cost savings and USD 100 per acre increase in net farm income for cotton growers.


Key Practices in Regenerative Cotton Farming

  • Cover crops: reduce erosion, support biodiversity, and enrich soil.

  • Conservation tillage / no-till: preserve soil structure, reduce erosion, and cut fuel use.

  • Crop rotation: restore soil fertility, disrupt pest cycles, and reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers.

  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM): combine biological, cultural, and technological measures to minimize chemical inputs.

  • Biodiversity conservation: protect habitats for microbes, insects, and wildlife, enhancing pollination and ecosystem services.
