Updated support to flood-affected business in the Central region

The 2020 Central Vietnam floods are a collection of ongoing floods in Central Vietnam and Cambodia in October 2020. The floods focus heavily in several provinces including Thua Thien HueHa TinhQuang Binh, and Quang Tri. It also coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic in Vietnam. These floods were mainly caused by the seasonal monsoon, though enhanced by numerous tropical cyclonesTropical Storm Linfa hit the area from 10-13 October, killing 90 people in Vietnam. On 14-16 October, Tropical Storm Nangka struck, killing 4 and displacing thousands. On 17 October, Tropical Depression Ofel struck the northern and central part of the country. Accumulations peaked at 3,245 mm (127.75 in) in Huong Linh, Huong Hoa DistrictQuang Tri Province.

 

About the losses of  garment and textile business during the floods in central region

Among VITAS 46 affiliated & official members, there are 24 business with heavy losses and espially there are 7 businesses with extremely heavy losses: Hoa Tho Quang Tri Garment Factory, Quang Tri Garment JSC, Hue Textile and Garment JSC, Phu Hoa An Textile and Garment JSC, Thien An Phu Textile and Garment JSC, Scavi Hue Company, Thien An Phat Textile Investment JSC


1. About the factory: there are more than 1,600 electronic devices heavily flooded, at Quang Tri Garment Joint Stock Company / Quang Phu / Quang Dien and Thien An Phat Textile Investment Joint Stock Company. After checking and reparing, there are more than 600 devices are totally damaged.


2. About the goods:
More than 100,000 finished products and nearly 3 tons of fabric were wet. In which, it is expected that 20% of the damaged finished products must be removed due to water-staining and moldy.


3. Labor:
The flood have left 6 people died (Phu Hoa An, Hue Textile and Garment, Scavi Hue), more than 8,800 families of workers in low-lying areas were isolated floods and storms accounted for about 40%. There are 1,215 houses deeply flooded, damaged furniture.


4. Regarding the salary for stopping work:

From 9th-18th October 2020, the power was cut, so business have to stopped production activities. On rainy days, each business have to pay salary for employees according to the regional minimum wage. Estimated payment: VND 12 billion for 7 days of suspension. Currently, in Quang Tri and Quang Binh, the factories have to stop working in 15-20 days.


5. About the production and delivery plan: Due to heavy rain and storm, finished goods will be delivered late to buyers. In addition, the quality of finished products that must be recycled due to the humidity after the flood is extremely difficult, causing many risks for businesses. The number of cartons to be re-ordered to replace the old ones that are wet, flat, broken ...


6. Business plan continues to face difficulties due to lack of orders, a deep decrease in revenue, lack of labor, increased costs, no delivery ... so businesses wishes to receive support from Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS)

About support from VITAS:

VITAS strongly recommends the Government and international organizations to provide urgent assistance solutions, thereby better preparing for future shocks starting from the repair of important infrastructure such as transport systems, hydroelectric dams, protective forests, environmental protection for central Vietnam.   

As our first reaction, Offices of Association send the first 50 million VND to factories that are suffering heavy losses, to assist the trade union in their work to rebuild especially to workers who have been hit special hard by flooding.

We continued to call for the support for enterprises in Central Vietnam.

We would like to update the donations work that have been done by our members as follows:

-          Employees of the Office of the Group and the Vietnam Textile and Garment Trade Union (2 regions) raised VND 85,200,000, 27 boxes of autumn winter clothes, underwear (7 boxes of which were new clothes and underwear).

-          Vietnam Textile and Garment Trade Union supported Hue Textile and Garment Joint Stock Company and Thien An Phat Textile and Garment Joint Stock Company with 100 million VND each; Supporting Phu Hoa An Textile and Garment Joint Stock Company 70 million VND for the units to perform activities to share and support for employees affected by floods. The next support will be continued by the Community College and communicated to all employees.

-          * Grassroots level: The organizations through many different channels (direct to local, through the Charity Fund of the Group & Trade Union, Vietnam Fatherland Front, Red Cross ...) have provided support. First steps for textile workers and people in the Central region such as:

-          Thien An Phu Textile and Garment Joint Stock Company mobilized about 189 million to buy basic necessities to support more than 150 workers affected by floods and in difficult circumstances.

-          Phu Hoa An Textile and Garment Joint Stock Company, the grassroots trade union called for a donation to support 31 million VND for workers whose husbands were swept away by floods.

-          Hue Textile and Garment Joint Stock Company supported workers with missing children at Rao Trang Hydropower Plant 3 million VND; Organized the visit to ask the families of cadres whose brother was a soldier who died in Rao Trang. The relief team of the Company Trade Union also went directly to Le Thuy district - Quang Binh province where the Company has a branch in order to promptly support 600 gifts to people and employees of the Company.

-          Binh Minh Garment Joint Stock Company supported 540 new clothing products of all kinds.

-          Garment Corporation 10 -CTCP prepares 1,000 gifts worth 200,000 VND / serving.

-          Employees and employees of Viet Thang Garment Joint Stock Company donated and bought 400 shirts for the people of Central Vietnam.

-          Dong Nai Garment Corporation Joint Stock Company supports 3,392 warm clothing products worth 300 million VND

-          Thanh Cong Textile Investment Trading Joint Stock Company initially donated VND 150 million

-          Binh An Textile and Garment Materials Company donated 2 million VND

-          Phong Phu International JSC donated 150 million VND.

-          Thu Duc Mechanical Joint Stock Company donated 2 million VND.

-          Viet Hung Fabric and Spinning Company Limited (Viet Thang cluster) donated VND 10 million
C.S.P Co., Ltd donated VND 5 million

The units in the system are still actively campaigning for donations to support the people of Central Vietnam, the specific results will continue to be updated.
